The British province of Punjab was divided into west Punjab and east Punjab, with the latter lying in Pakistan. In 1966, Haryana was formed from the east Punjab with majority Hindi-speaking people. The west part contained mostly Punjabi-speaking population and is currently the state of Punjab. Since the city of Chandigarh was on the border, it was made a union territory to serve as capital of both Haryana and Punjab.
