About Andaman and Nicobar Tourism

It’s all in the name! Andaman is called the ‘Island of Gold’ by Italian traveller Niccolò de' Conti in his works. Another idea behind the name of the island is that it is connected to Sanskrit ‘Malay Handuman’ which is related to deity Hanuman. Nakkavaram, meaning ‘naked man’ in Tamil is probably the ground of the name ‘Nicobar’ designated by the Chola dynasty for the islands. This name is mentioned in the Tanjore inscription (1050AD). On the other hand, Nicobarese population spoke the Mon-Khmer language and were accompanied by the Shompen people. These groups were not associated with the Andamanese till Middle Paleolithic.
